Therabot Trial Takes Off: Pioneering AI App Aims to Transform Mental Health-Care
• Therabot, AI-powered therapeutic app, launches clinical trial with 210 participants.
• Developed using generative AI for personalized mental health therapy.
• App aims to significantly improve accessibility to mental health care.
• First AI therapeutic app to undergo clinical testing for digital therapy.
Tweet from X @lilianweng
Last month marked the launch of an experimental clinical trial for Therabot, a text-based therapeutic app powered by artificial intelligence, at Dartmouth College. The trial includes 210 participants and utilizes generative AI, similar to the technology behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to generate responses and advice tailored to individual users' needs. Unlike many existing AI-powered wellness apps that operate on predefined scripts, Therabot is designed to learn from interactions to offer more personalized support, potentially improving access to mental health care significantly.
The development team, led by Nicholas Jacobson, has spent nearly five years refining the AI to ensure it provides safe and responsible advice. Initially, Therabot struggled with inappropriate responses derived from its training data, which included online support forums and traditional psychotherapy materials. However, after a shift to using in-house created therapy scripts, the app’s responses now largely meet the developers' gold standard for therapeutic communication.

How Robotiz3d's AI Robots Are Paving the Way to Pothole-Free Streets
• Robotiz3d's ARRES system employs AI to detect and repair road surface issues.
• ARRES Prevent robot autonomously seals cracks, preventing pothole formation.
• ARRES Ultra designed for extensive road repairs, enhancing durability.
• Robotiz3d's innovation promises cost-efficient, safer road maintenance.

Robotiz3d is revolutionizing road maintenance with its Autonomous Road Repair System (ARRES), designed to significantly enhance how roads are monitored and repaired. The system includes ARRES Eye technology, which uses advanced imaging to detect road surface problems like potholes and cracks from vehicles such as buses and trucks. This technology logs issues into a database, prioritizing repairs based on severity.
The ARRES Prevent is an unmanned robotic vehicle that autonomously navigates roads to seal small cracks before they turn into potholes, using materials that prevent water infiltration and damage from environmental elements. This proactive maintenance approach is designed to extend the lifespan of road surfaces and reduce the need for extensive repairs.
For larger road damages, Robotiz3d has developed ARRES Ultra, a robust machine capable of handling more significant repairs, such as filling and compacting potholes, ensuring a seamless finish.

In a significant development, Norfolk Southern has agreed to a $600 million settlement following a derailment that drew intense scrutiny over its safety practices. This settlement, the largest ever for a railroad disaster in North America, does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing by Norfolk Southern. The company anticipates that the total costs from the derailment will exceed $1 billion, and it continues to face legal challenges from both the state of Ohio and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Meanwhile, other major corporate developments include the FAA investigating Boeing for safety concerns raised by a veteran engineer about the 787 Dreamliner's production, leading to a drop in Boeing’s shares. Paramount Global is also in the news for downsizing its board amid merger discussions, which negatively impacted its stock value.

NYC's AI Chatbot Fiasco: Misguided Advice Raises Alarm Over Government Tech
• NYC chatbot gives legally incorrect and bizarre advice, remains online.
• Mayor defends decision to keep chatbot, citing technological growth pains.
• Experts criticize the bot's lack of oversight and potential dangers.
• Microsoft collaborates to improve the bot based on official city documentation.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that an AI-powered chatbot would help New York business owners navigate the government.
A chatbot powered by artificial intelligence and designed to aid small business owners in New York City has come under fire for providing incorrect and sometimes illegal advice. Despite the criticism and the evident issues reported by The Markup, Mayor Eric Adams has decided to keep the chatbot active on the city's official website, arguing that resolving these problems is a part of developing new technology. The chatbot, launched in October, was intended as a one-stop solution for navigating the city's bureaucracy but has faced backlash for its flawed responses. This includes telling employers it's legal to fire employees for discriminatory reasons and advising restaurants it's acceptable to serve rodent-damaged food. Microsoft, responsible for the bot's AI through Azure services, is actively working to refine the system to ensure it aligns with the city’s policies.
